I'd rather have a memory than a dream is a collection of images exploring queer invisibility in the history of photography. I’ve drawn particular inspiration from Saul Leiter’s street photography of the 1940s and 1950s. By obscuring his subjects behind foggy windows or heavy rain, Leiter developed a distinctive painterly style. This series uses photo manipulation, collage, and its own half-hidden figures to create lesbian, gay, and otherwise queer histories — even memories.
Sarah Vaughan recorded ‘I’d Rather Have a Memory Than a Dream’ with Dizzy Gillespie and his band on May 11th, 1945 in New York City.
